PIRACY - a subject that affects us all.....
O.K so piracy is a subject that is covered virtually all the time
by the Amiga magazines, but it is a subject that needs sorting out,
and QUICK.
Here are two short stories that have NO relation to each other at all
at first, but after reading them I think you will see how piracy will
affect the Amiga in years to come.
The stories have been set out as though they are from a newspaper.....
WHITEPOOL FUN SANDS CLOSES DOWN 24th September 1997
The worlds largest Theme park has closed down today with the loss of
2 Million jobs.
WHITEPOOL FUN SANDS was Whitepools main tourist attraction.
The reason for it closing down has been disclosed for the very first time,
here is that story.
When Whitepool Fun Sands opened it contained just one ride, but throughout
the years it has expanded to well over 10 Thousand new rides!
But after the Fun Sands decided that you would pay to get in instead of
paying for a go on a ride things started to go down hill.
It was found out that there was a young man standing at the back entrance
to the Fun Sands and letting people in for free. Therefore, the Fun Sands
were no longer making any money. The young man was clever though, he
could'nt be stoped because he was very secretive about what he was doing
and did'nt tell any of his friends.
So he could just stand at the back entrance to the Fun Sands and advise
people that they could use his entrance and be admitted for free!
The tourists liked this and soon the Fun Sands would be full, but
nobody had paid to get in. So the Fun Sands Staff started to be paid
off, They could not be paid so they had to go, and a fun park with NO
staff is useless as you could not use the rides,so the tourists decided
to leave.
One tourist said "We've been coming here for the last 10 years,we've never
paid to get in but that was a good thing, but now theres nobody working
there, so we cant use the rides."
The case continues...
PIRACY ON THE AMIGA. 24th September 1997
It started out around the year of 1985. Commodore have just released
what looks like it could become the greatest home computer of all time,
The AMIGA!
The Amiga sells like mad, nearly every home has one. So software starts
to be developed at a very fast rate, there are literally HUNDREDS of
software houses trying to release games for the new AMIGA.
Then in a house not too far away, a young man has an idea, would'nt it
be good if I could copy these great software titles and then sell or
even just give them to all my friends, and then they can give them to
their friends and so on!
So this young man gets together with some of his friends and they start
to "crack" the games, and they do it!
So they quickly copy as many as they can,and give them to loads of people.
Soon the software companies here about this, and they are getting mad.
So mad infact that slowly the software companies decide to develop for
the "console toys" and scrap Amiga games.
Some of the software companies go bust, this means that instead of
Hundreds of software houses developing games for the Amiga, there are
only a few left!
This gets back to Commodore, and they decide that the Amiga is no longer
any use for anyone, so they STOP making them!!!!!
The machine that is owned by millions is now USELESS, there are now
NO software houses writing games or utilities.
THE AMIGA IS DEAD
Well, it could, or even, WILL happen.
The two stories have nothing in common accept a type of "PIRACY" is
forcing two businesses to close down.
One is the fictional "WHITEPOOL FUN SANDS" but the other is
the very real COMMODORE AMIGA.
Do you wan't to see the machine that you have just paid nearly £300.00
for just disappear
I KNOW I DON'T.
